How to use a Search Engine Effectively
Most search engines rely on computer programs called spiders or robots to crawl the Web and log the words on each page, to create their listings. You hunt through those listings by entering keywords related to a topic into a search "box." The search engine scans its database and returns
a file with links to websites containing the word or words specified. Because these databases are very large, search engines often return thousands of results. Without search strategies or techniques, finding what you need can be like finding a needle in a haystack.
To use search engines effectively, it is essential to apply techniques that narrow results and push the most relevant pages to the top of the results list. Ideally, you know the name of the company, product, service or person you are trying to find. The next best thing is to think of keywords
that are very specific to what you are looking for. Stringing keywords together can narrow it down even further.
For example: You want to find out what NASA is doing with the missions to Mars. Searching for "NASA" will give you thousands of links on everything they have done and what people have said about them. But if you instead input "NASA Mars Missions" you would be able to
find links that are directly relevant to what you want to know.
And to make it even simpler, here are links to several of the best search engines out there.
